Gala show was Saturday night!
Jillina is an American specialist in dance fusion styles. Since 1999, she has been the director of Jillina’s Sahlala Dancers, the premier Middle Eastern and world fusion dance entertainment company in Los Angeles. From 2003 – 2009 she was the Artistic Director and Main Choreographer for the Bellydance Superstars, and performed with them in over a dozen countries. Her Evolution Dance Studio in Universal City, California, provides rehearsal space to the choreographers from So You Think You Can Dance.
Issam Houshan was born in Syria and received formal training at the Damascus Academy of Music. He is also the only remaining disciple of the legendary Arabic drum master Mahmood Salahadeen. Issam has performed with Sting at the Grammy Awards and with the international Bellydance Superstars tour. He was featured in the film American Bellydancer and has released nine albums.

This workshop was open to all drummers and dancers who wanted to enhance their understanding of Arabic music.
Saturday, August 23
11am – 2pm: “Raks Sharki Ala Jillina”
Jillina taught a choreography filled with variety of traveling steps, strong hip technique and flow. The goal was to strengthen technique and deepen our understanding of Arabic music. Students were encouraged to develop their musicality, grace and personal expression.
2:30 – 4:30pm “Combination Exploration 1” with Jillina & Issam
In this class we learned exciting step combinations to the most popular Arabic rhythms! There was a variety of movements, from snaky slow to funky fast. The students also explored the art of improvisation.
8:30pm: Sandybell’s 5th Gala Belly-Dance Show!
We enjoyed the art of Oriental Dance with amazing international superstar Jillina, master percussionist Issam Houshan, and talented belly-dancers from Panama, Costa Rica, Venezuela, El Salvador and Honduras!
Sunday, August 24
11am -2pm: “Combination Exploration 2” with Jillina & Issam
3 – 5pm: “KaPow Drum Solo!” with Jillina & Issam
This was not your everyday drum solo! The choreography began with fun and funky fusion moves, before transitioning into powerful Arabic percussion. Jillina and Issam broke down several shimmy techniques and played with layering and stylization. This was a great routine for anyone’s practice or performance repertoire.
